Ozzy and Sigi stood at the end of the driveway as the school bus pulled up at 8:14 Monday morning. Ozzy liked knowing that the driver was intentionally stopping just for them. They climbed on and took the short ride to school with a police car following. Clark had decided to stay at the house and act as guard bird in case anyone came around. It felt strange not having the bird in his pocket. Clark had stretched out the right-hand pockets in all of Ozzy’s trousers into a custom-sized place for him to be carried around.

When they reached their destination, Ozzy and Sigi got off the bus and parted ways.

Otter Rock High School was a typical high school. There were teachers and students and lockers and halls. It had a cafeteria, a gym, and classrooms set up to teach specific things in a very general way. The outside was boxy and ordinary, with a blue bulldog painted on the front. Inside, the walls were white, the floors were blue, and the ceiling was a shade of gray that nobody would ever choose as their favorite color.

Ozzy walked down B Hall toward his first class. He was wearing a black shirt with blue jeans and burgundy sneakers. Getting his clothes to match was something he still struggled with. It was a life skill he just couldn’t master. Living alone, he had never thought about clothes or worried about things matching. Now that he was a part of society, he did. Sigi was willing to give him advice on the matter, but he wanted to be able to do things on his own, so he rarely asked for help.

This morning he’d done okay, and his burgundy-colored feet helped move him down B Hall. He weaved through other students making their way to places all of them didn’t want to be.

For the most part, Ozzy was still ignored at school. There had been stories about what he and Sigi had been through, but they hadn’t been told by either Ozzy or Sigi. He was a mystery, just unusual enough for others to stay away for fear that they might be judged for talking to him. He was fortunate to be tall and good looking, but the combination didn’t draw people to him, it just helped them whisper kinder things than they might about someone less attractive. Ozzy had an ally in Sigi, but her relationship with the odd boy who now lived above her garage was something that added to the general misunderstanding and mystery of Ozzy Toffy.

Some people might find the feeling of not fitting in too much to bear, but despite being a puzzle piece that had not found its spot, Ozzy liked school. He liked the warm lunches and the conversations he overheard. He liked the huge bathrooms and the drinking fountains. He liked asking questions and hearing answers about everything from Shakespeare to Snapchat. Which is why he smiled slightly as he entered his class and sat in the empty front row.
